When I met my wife, Terri, about 15 years ago, she had a Giant Schnauzer named Genny.

Genny was a beautiful girl, a big (110lbs) strong headed love.

For Christmas that year I painted Genny for Terri. It was a stylized painting showing Genny flying. For many years I had painted stylized flying horses. This style worked for Genny because she could "fly" over low fences.

A friend saw it and asked me to paint their dog (Melody, a Bearded Collie), someone else their cats. I loved painting these paintings and painted more. These were the the dog dream paintings, "City Dog With Country Dreams", "A Golden Retriever's Fantasy" and a few others.

I showed these paintings at my gallery in Seattle, BAILEY NELSON GALLERY. This gallery I opened in 1987 and represented, Northwest Coast Indian Art, Southwest American Art and Contemporary Art.

The reaction to my dog and cat art was fantastic. I did a few commissions and started publishing prints.

Not long after the start of showing my dog and cat art, a neighboring art gallery was planning a show with a coffee theme and asked me to do something with a dog and coffee. That day I received a catalogue from a publisher of vintage art advertising posters. In it were posters with coffee and dogs. This inspired me to come up with "Coffee Dog". It sold the day I finished it, which I thought was pretty exciting and knew what I wanted to do with my dog and cat art.

I really like what I'm doing with my dogs and cats and vintage art.

After a few years however, it was evident that the other artforms at the gallery didn't mix well with my dog and cat art and over a few years I changed the focus of the gallery to more of a working studio and for several years showed my dog and cat art there. Over these years I developed relationships with other galleries, fine stores and dog boutiques.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I bought a home that has a nice mother-in-law house next to it. The thought was to eventually close the gallery and make the mother-in-law house into a studio. In the fall of 2007 my landlord decided to double the rent and so it became an easy decision to close the gallery.

Prior to my art career I was a marketing consultant and copywriter. The copy writing part of designing a painting is one of the fun parts of my vintage advertising style.

I started painting in Junior High and painted on and off for years. I graduated from the University of Utah but took only a few art and design oriented classes. At that time, I didn't imagine that art could be a career.

Besides my art career, my interests are my dogs, Robby and Cleo, two rescue mutts. I also love cycling. And remember that house my wife and I bought, it's over a half an acre and had been let go for many years. So we spend a lot of time rehabing the property and planting gardens. The property has a two salmon streams and many birds.
